Lymphedema patients suffer from pain and limitations in movement due to swelling. The most common treatment is compression therpay but there are other treatment options such as massage therapy that manually drains lymphatic system. What factors contribute to the success of these therapies is unknown. This study will collect blood and/or skin samples before and after lymhedema treatments in paitents that requrie this treatment. Biological markers will be studied to see if there are any changes and whether these changes are associated wtih effectivness of these therapies. This will enable tailoring therapies towrard the individul patient and develop new treatments in the future.

Patients with heart disease are often prescribed many medications and these patients may experience drug interactions or negative drug related side effects. With newer medications and treatments available, it is not well known whether older drugs, such as beta-blockers, are still an effective and safe option for treating heart disease. Some evidence suggests beta-blockers should be continued, whereas other evidence suggests beta-blockers might cause unnecessary harm. The study hopes to determine whether continuation or discontinuation of beta-blockers will affect long term cardiovascular outcomes. The study investigators will also examine how beta-blockers continuation or discontinuation affects several quality of life measures.

Some Canadians who identify as sexual and/or gender minorities (SGM)—such as gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, transgender, and gender-diverse individuals—face barriers to health care and poorer outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened these challenges, especially for immunocompromised transplant patients. Clear, reliable information is critical, yet many report guidance from health authorities and providers is inconsistent or confusing. Our study will examine how transplant programs collect and use SGM data, engage SGM transplant patients about their experiences, and partner with SGM health groups. This work will help reduce inequities and improve care for SGM transplant patients.

We are trying to find better ways to help children who need to have a medical procedure done that may cause them pain and anxiety. One thing we can do to help a child is distraction. This helps to take their attention away from the source of the pain and anxiety. Some examples of distraction include watching videos, listening to music or stories, playing with toys. In this study, we are trying to understand if distraction using a robot can help take a child’s attention away from the anxiety and pain of having an intravenous (IV) insertion.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of a fiber supplement and metformin alone and in combination, over 6 months, on metabolism and inflammation through changes in the gut microbes in adolescents with obesity, insulin resistance and family history of type 2 diabetes. Our study will provide information about effective strategies for the prevention and treatment of such conditions. Early detection and therapy might help control weight gain and prevent type 2 diabetes in adulthood.

We are studying people with Covid-19 infection to look for a genetic predisposition to infection, a genetic predisposition to more severe forms of the disease. We are studying the Covid-19 virus to look for mutations that may affect the infectivity of the virus or the severity of the disease caused by the virus.

Proper nutrition during cancer helps people maintain strength and energy. Nutrition knowledge is one factor that influences food choice. Although there are many sources of nutrition information available to the public, not all of these are trustworthy. This research will inform the level of nutrition knowledge and sources of information used by people with a new diagnosis of cancer and how this impacts food choice. This information will help registered dietitians provide streamlined nutritional counselling to individuals with cancer and create resources that include nutritional advice and recommendations on trustworthy sources of information.

This pilot RCT is critical to test acceptability, assess logistics, optimize the design, and build the capacities for a full-scale RCT. Our multicenter pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) will address the following research question: is it feasible to conduct a full-scale multicenter RCT to assess the comparative-effectiveness of a virtual home-based pre-habilitation versus usual care for kidney transplant candidates?
