Surgical Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation Efficacy (SAFE) Trial

Heart Failure | Ablation | Atrial Fibrillation (AF) | Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)

The Surgical Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation Efficacy (SAFE) trial will assess whether concomitant surgical ablation of AF decreases the long-term risk of admission for heart failure in patients with a history of non-permanent AF undergoing cardiac surgery for another indication.

  • Eligible Ages:

    18 and up

Participation Criteria

Inclusion Criteria:
Inclusion Criteria

1) Age ≥ 18 years
2) Undergoing a clinically indicated cardiac surgical procedure including coronary artery bypass surgery, aortic valve replacement, ascending aorta replacement, or combinations thereof.
3) A documented history of paroxysmal or persistent AF
4) Provide informed consent
Exclusion Criteria:
1) Dominant atrial arrhythmia is atrial flutter
2) Documented left atrial diameter greater than or equal to 6 cm
3) Previous cardiac surgery requiring opening the pericardium
4) Patients undergoing any of the following procedures:
a. Heart transplant
b. Complex congenital heart surgery
c. Sole indication for surgery is ventricular assist device insertion
d. Mitral valve repair or replacement
e. Tricuspid valve repair or replacement
5) Patient resides in a long-term care facility
