Exploring the Long-Term Impact of Pre-Clerkship Community Engaged Learning on Medical Students in Clerkship 

This study explores how your community placement during pre-clerkship has influenced your experience in clerkship. During your first two years of medical school, you completed a year-long placement with a community organization as part of the Community Engaged Learning program. Now that you are in clerkship and working in clinical settings like hospitals, we want to understand whether and how those community experiences have shaped the way you interact with patients, make clinical decisions, and think about your role as a future doctor.
We are interested in hearing about what you remember most from your community placement, whether you've found yourself applying any lessons from that experience during your clinical rotations, and what aspects of the program were most meaningful or could be improved. Your insights will help us understand the lasting impact of community-based learning and will inform improvements to the program for future medical students.

If you choose to participate, you will join a one-on-one interview with a member of our research team via Zoom. The interview will take about 45-60 minutes, and you'll receive the questions in advance so you can think about your experiences. We'll ask you to share examples of how your community placement has or hasn't influenced your work in clerkship, what elements of the program stood out to you, and what suggestions you have for making it better.

Your participation is completely voluntary, and your honest feedback, whether it be positive or critical, is valuable and will not affect your standing in the medical program in any way. You will receive a $10 giftcard as compensation for your time.

  • Sex:

    Male, Female, Intersex
  • Eligible Ages:

    20 to 40

Participation Criteria

Inclusion Criteria:
1) Currently enrolled as Class of 2026 medical students at the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine.

2) Currently later in clerkship years (specifically years 2.5-3 of their medical training)

3) Successfully completed the mandatory RIME Community Engaged Learning (CEL) program during their pre-clerkship training.

4) Access to an electronic device on which the virtual interview can be conducted through.
Exclusion Criteria:
1) Are not members of the Class of 2026 medical students at the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine.

2) Did not complete the mandatory RIME CEL program during pre-clerkship

3) Have not yet entered clerkship training
