Comparing Two Orthodontic Expanders for Better Breathing and Jaw Growth in Children
Sleep Apnea | Children | OrthodonticsThis study aims to compare two orthodontic expanders—Invisalign Palatal Expander (IPE) and Hyrax Expander (RPE)—to see which is more effective in improving nasal breathing, sleep quality, and jaw growth in children with a narrow upper jaw (maxillary transverse deficiency). The study will measure airflow, sleep patterns, and jaw changes over a year. By understanding how these devices affect breathing and jaw development, this research will help orthodontists choose the best treatment for children who need palatal expansion.

Eligible Ages:
6 to 14
Participation Criteria
Inclusion Criteria:
Children who:
Are between 6-14 years old
Have a narrow upper jaw (maxillary transverse deficiency) diagnosed by an orthodontist
Have fully erupted first molars
Have not had previous orthodontic treatment
Are at high risk for sleep breathing issues (e.g., snoring, mouth breathing)
Have parents/guardians who can give consent
Exclusion Criteria:
Have craniofacial conditions (e.g., cleft palate, genetic syndromes)
Have a history of previous orthodontic treatment
Have a medical condition that affects orthodontic treatment
Have temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders
Need tooth extractions or jaw surgery as part of treatment
