CHARACTERIZATION OF ARRHYTHMIA SUBSTRATE TO ABLATE PERSISTENT ATRIAL FIBRILLATION (COAST-AF)

Atrial Fibrillation

This study is comparing two ways of doing an ablation procedure for people with persistent atrial fibrillation. Half of the patients will receive a regular procedure and the other half will have some extra "mapping" done inside the heart for abnormal tissue scientists think may be responsible for AF and those areas would be ablated as well. Patients will not know which kind of procedure they receive. Patients are then followed by study staff every 6 months and wear a 14-day cardiac monitor which will be reviewed with the doctor.

Participation Requirements

  • Sex:

    Male, Female, Intersex

  • Eligible Ages:

    18 to 90

Participation Criteria

Inclusion Criteria:
1. Age ≥18 years
2. AF which is persistent: > 7days, at least one episode > 3 months
3. Other risk factors like female sex, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney problems, or an enlarged left atrium of the heart


Exclusion Criteria:
1. Previous ablation for AF or atrial flutter;
2. Unable to use oral blood thinners
3. Heart valve problems
4. Pregnant or breastfeeding;
