Rimegepant is approved to treat migraine in adults but has not been studied in adolescents. The purpose of this study is to see if rimegepant is effective and safe for adolescents with chronic migraine. Participants will receive one of 2 treatments: rimegepant or placebo. The study medication is given as a tablet taken every other day. Participants and the study doctor will not know whether they are receiving rimegepant or placebo in the first 12 weeks. After 12 weeks, all participants will receive rimegepant. Participants will track their headaches daily in an eDiary. There are 7 visits in the first part of the study and 12 visits in the second part. These include questionnaires, bloodwork, and ECG.

Patients on the waiting list for kidney transplantation are at risk for coronary artery disease (CAD). Current standard of care strategy is that patients without any symptoms will have routine test to determine if they have heart diseases. However, this current screening strategy is not evidence based, has substantial known and potential harms, and is very costly. The purpose of the study is designed to determine which strategy (regular screening or screening only in the presence of symptoms) is more effective in preventing heart attacks in kidney transplant candidates.

Are you 65 or older? We want to hear from you! Researchers at the University of Alberta are working to improve how quality of life is measured for older adults. By sharing your experiences, you can help make sure that future research better reflects the health and well-being of people your age. What’s involved? You’ll be invited to take part in a one-on-one in-person interview where you can share your thoughts, and you’ll complete a few short questionnaires about your background and quality of life. There are no risks associated with participating in this study. You will receive $50 cash as a thank you for your time.

We are asking you to take part in a research study in the University of Alberta Department of Psychiatry. Stress increases risk for depression and anxiety, but many people do not develop these problems. The aim of the present study is to understand individual differences in susceptibility and sensitivity to stress. We will also investigate how stress affects the brain using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Cortisol hormone levels increase during stress and can negatively affect brain structure and function. We will measure your stress level, memory function, and cortisol level.

Teenagers living with type 1 diabetes mellitus will eventually need to learn to take care of their diabetes by themselves, instead of relying on their caregivers. Teenagers may want to be more independent, and they may want to manage diabetes their own way. Self-Management Education (SME) is a strategy health professionals use to support persons in learning how to care of themselves. Since every teenager's life is different, using the same teaching method for everyone does not work well. We plan to conduct interviews with 15 teenagers and 15 caregivers. We will look for common themes throughout these conversations. Our findings will then support clinicians in meeting the SME needs of the teenager learning to live well with T1DM.

Climate change will disproportionately impact the health of certain groups such as older adults, rural, children, pregnant women, immigrant populations, and persons with dementia. Weather and air pollution are two critical pathways through which climate change will impact chronic diseases in these populations. The impact of these events on communities is affected by a number of other factors including the amount of green space, access to facilities, among others. The aim of this work is to develop climate change-related chronic disease surveillance for Alberta. We will then create an interactive online mapping surveillance to help vulnerable populations and inform public health policies.

Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common nutritional deficiency, and the primary cause of anemia worldwide. Pregnant women and newborns are most at risk of ID and anemia, and these conditions can cause lasting health complications in these children. To diagnose ID in newborns, doctors rely on iron measurements in the mother, but these may not always give an accurate picture of the iron status in the baby. Here, we propose to study the relationship between mother and newborn iron measurements. The goal of this work is to improve precision and accuracy of ID and anemia diagnoses in newborn babies. We will recruit healthy participants in their second or third trimester that are planning to deliver their babies at Royal Alexandra Hospital

There are many causes of myocarditis and/or pericarditis and although rare, there have been reported incidents after having COVID-19 infection or receiving mRNA COVID-19 vaccinations. Canadian and international data show a higher rate of myocarditis and/or pericarditis after receiving mRNA COVID-19 vaccinations than would normally be expected in the general population. The purpose of this study is to collect information on how people who have this diagnosis in Canada are identified, treated, and assess how they do over the study duration. This may help to contribute to the overall understanding of this medical condition.
