18 - 45Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common nutritional deficiency, and the primary cause of anemia worldwide. Pregnant women and newborns are most at risk of ID and anemia, and these conditions can cause lasting health complications in these children. To diagnose ID in newborns, doctors rely on iron measurements in the mother, but these may not always give an accurate picture of the iron status in the baby. Here, we propose to study the relationship between mother and newborn iron measurements. The goal of this work is to improve precision and accuracy of ID and anemia diagnoses in newborn babies. We will recruit healthy participants in their second or third trimester that are planning to deliver their babies at Royal Alexandra Hospital

18 - 40There are many causes of myocarditis and/or pericarditis and although rare, there have been reported incidents after having COVID-19 infection or receiving mRNA COVID-19 vaccinations. Canadian and international data show a higher rate of myocarditis and/or pericarditis after receiving mRNA COVID-19 vaccinations than would normally be expected in the general population. The purpose of this study is to collect information on how people who have this diagnosis in Canada are identified, treated, and assess how they do over the study duration. This may help to contribute to the overall understanding of this medical condition.

18 - 100REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a disorder where a person "acts out their dreams" while sleeping. RBD is often associated with developing diseases like Parkinson’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. Normally, the only way to diagnose RBD is with an overnight sleep study in a sleep lab. This is expensive and often not easily available, leaving many people with RBD undiagnosed. Actigraphy is a simple way of monitoring daily activity using a device similar to a watch. We want to see if actigraphy can diagnose RBD with similar accuracy to an overnight study in a sleep lab. We also will see how actigraphy is related to general markers of neurologic health measured using clinical and memory tests.

50 - 100The purpose of this trial is to test if closing off the left atrial appendage (LAA) with a surgical device known as the AtriClip® reduces stroke occurrence in patients who do not have atrial fibrillation (AF), but have one or more risk factors for developing AF in the next 5 years. To properly answer this question, patients who are scheduled for heart surgery, such as artery bypass or valve replacement surgery, and have one or more risk factors for developing AF will be screened and considered to participate. Patients who meet all the trial requirements and agree to participate will be enrolled.

18 - 100We are looking for people who are regular gamblers to participate in a research study. This study investigates the effects of taking a drug used to treat alcohol dependence to treat disordered gambling. If selected, you will be in the control group and will not receive any medication. Participants will also have brain scans at the beginning and end of the study and will will passively measure brain signals on the scalp at follow-up . Participants will be asked to complete a range of assessments. Compensation is provided for completing these assessments. Participation is confidential.

18 - 70COVID-19 is an infection that affects a person’s lungs and makes it hard to breath. People with COVID-19 can also get a fever and cough a lot. Many people with these symptoms will use over the counter drugs, like pain relievers and cough and cold products. These drugs can help people feel better when they are sick. But some of these drugs might affect how SARS-CoV-2 (the virus causing COVID-19) works in the body. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a link between over the counter medication use and the course of COVID-19. All confirmed cases of COVID-19 and a random sample of people with negative COVID-19 tests will be sent invitation letters from Alberta Health Services independent of the study investigators.

Under 105The primary purpose of this study is to allow appropriate patients access to F-DOPA PET imaging and to assess improvements in our imaging technique. Participation in this study allows access to FDOPA PET scans for specific patient groups including: 1. Pediatric patients (<18 years old) with congenital hyperinsulinism. 2. Pediatric patients (<18 years old) with neuroblastoma. 3. Pediatric (l<18 years old) or Adult patients (18 or older) with known or clinically suspected neuroendocrine tumor. 4. Adult patients (18 or older) with a clinical suspicion of Parkinson's disease or Lewy body dementia. 5. Pediatric (<18 years old) or Adult patients (18 or older) with brain tumors.

Under 120There is currently no effective medical therapy for nHCM. Aficamten is an oral investigational drug designed to reduce excessive contraction of your heart muscle that is the root cause of nHCM. This study is designed to further evaluate the effect of aficamten on quality of life, exercise capacity, heart failure symptoms, cardiac biomarkers, cardiac remodeling, and clinical outcomes. Additionally, the safety and tolerability of aficamten will be assessed in participants with nHCM.
