Observing sex differences in hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction in humans

We are trying to see how blood vessels in our lungs react in low oxygen (hypoxia). And we want to see how the response differs between males and females. As a participant, you will come in for 2 separate visits. The first visit will involve a screening. Then you will become familiar with ultrasound scans of the heart. The second visit will involve a blood draw and then ultrasound scans in a low-oxygen chamber for 2 hours. We will take images of the heart every 40 minutes while in the chamber, and 30 minutes after exiting the chamber.

    Male, Female

  • Eligible Ages:

    18 to 40

Participation Criteria

Inclusion Criteria:
We are seeking healthy, recreationally active males and females between the age of 18-40.
Exclusion Criteria:
- Obese
- Cardiorespiratory disease
- Lung disease
- Diabetes
- Heart valve disorders
- Cardiac pacemaker
- Females: Pregnant or nursing
- History of high altitude pulmonary edema
- Not exposed to altitude >2500m or air travel >4 hours within the past week
- Currently a smoker (including vaping)
- Currently undergoing hormone replacement therapy
